Dear Parishioners,

I have good news to share with you. As many of you already heard from reading in the Staten Island Advance, Our Lady Help of Christians Parish and Archdiocese of New York are about to finalize an agreement with AHRC NYC for them to open Staten Island Preparatory School in our school building to serve special needs students. The article gave the impression that the deal is completed. In reality we still haven’t signed the paperwork, but I have every confidence this will be completed soon. I wanted to be the first one to tell you, but unfortunately, the media broke it first.

I hope you will join me in gratitude to God for introducing us to AHRC. Their mission to serve autistic and other special needs children and their for space certainly is complimentary to our mission as a Catholic parish. We will be sharing the building with them so that our Religious Education program and our evening/ weekend activities in the school gym can still continue. It is my hope that their work with special needs children can become an outlet for us to reach out to the wider community with the love of Christ. AHRC has great relationships with other parishes in Brooklyn, and I have every reason to believe that ours will be excellent too. I hope that you will join me in making our parish a welcoming place for the AHRC families who educate their children in our school building. I am confident our parish community will graciously support them in accomplishing the mission of Staten Island Preparatory School.

Allow me to thank Mr. Angelo Aponte, Msgr. Peter Finn, Mr. David Brown, Mrs. Christina Micciuoli and Mr. Rafel Salim for their efforts in bringing this together. I look forward to a time when we can formally introduce the parish to our new friends at Staten Island Preparatory School and ask for your prayers that the Lord will bless this new venture allowing Staten Island Preparatory School to be a great success.

With prayers and best wishes, I am,

Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Fr. James Ferreira
